Background
Clean breathing air is essential for the health and quality of life of all people. Due to the regular exceeding of air pollution limits in German cities and due to upcoming infringement proceedings of the European Union, more and more municipalities in Germany are faced with the task of reducing NOx emissions as quickly and sustainably as possible.
To improve air quality in the Greater Munich area, the Me (Munich Electrified, project duration: 2018 - 2020) funding project was created as part of the "Clean Air 2017 - 2020" immediate action program of the BMVI and BMWi. This project focuses on the expansion of charging infrastructure to make electromobility more attractive for private individuals and businesses.
Problem
In the long term, the electrification of individual mobility will lead to an increase in the quality of life in large cities by improving air quality and climate and noise protection. Although the number of electric vehicles available and registered on the market is constantly increasing, a switch to electromobility for private individuals and businesses only makes sense if an adequate infrastructure of charging points is available.
For a sustainable increase in market penetration in the field of electromobility, the establishment and expansion of a dense network of charging points is therefore mandatory. This is the focus of the Me project, in order to take long-term measures in the area of individual mobility to move away from fossil fuels and improve air quality through the use of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the greater Munich area.
So far, the City of Munich (LHM) is already working together with the Munich public utilities in the IHFEM funding programme to expand 1000 charging points (500 charging points) by the end of 2019, but further charging infrastructure measures are necessary to achieve a sufficient density of charging infrastructure and to meet the diverse needs of the various user groups of electromobility.
In essence, Me is concerned with the positioning, planning, design and concrete technical implementation of charging points as well as the communication of connected vehicles and the realisation of charging strategies. Me consists of two sub-projects, which are shown in the overall project overview:
- Subproject 1: Construction of private, commercial and public charging infrastructure in residential buildings, commercial and public parking garages (project partners: City of Munich, Technical University of Munich/ Chair of Automotive Engineering)
- Subproject 2: Construction and operation of charging infrastructure on public land by private providers (project partners: City of Munich, University of Munich/Chair of Traffic Engineering and Control)
Objective of Subproject 1
In subproject 1, the Chair of Automotive Engineering is working on the development of a white paper on the establishment of charging infrastructure in residential buildings, commercial and public parking garages. For this purpose, the mobility and energy requirements for possible charging points are first determined and, based on this, feasible combinations of electric vehicles and charging points for the respective application are investigated and evaluated. Finally, the design and technical implementation of charging points will be part of the white paper in order to provide a comprehensive guideline for future infrastructure projects.
Implementation
In order to achieve the described objectives of subproject 1, the Chair of Automotive Engineering will work on the following points:
- Inventory of charging technologies and tariff models currently available at the Mart, technical and economic consideration of current series vehicles
- Mobility analysis of the focus groups involved in the funding programme, data recording using an OBD2 data logger
- Simulative consideration of the use cases, recommendation of combinations of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure solutions as well as potential savings by adapting charging strategies
- Accompanying the development of the charging infrastructure with selected focus groups and subsequent validation of the concept
- Creation of a white paper based on the experience gained
