History of the institute
The Institute of Sustainable Mobile Drivetrains was founded back in 1936 with the original name, "Aircraft engines and engine theory." In 1938 it was possible to move into the new building in the Schragenhofstraße in Moosach (Kapuzinerhölzl). Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kurt Schnauffer was head of the department until 1945.
After World War II Prof. First Prof. Dr.- Ing.Wilhelm Endres (1946 - 1962) and then Prof. Dr.-Ing. Albrecht W. Hussmann (1962 - 1975) managed the institute. Since 1950 the institute jas been known under the name Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Motor Vehicles (LVK). From 1975 to 1999 Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Woschni headed the institute.
In the year 2000, the institute was divided into two, the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines (LVK) and the Institute of Automotive Technology (FTM). Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Wachtmeister has been the professor of the institute from April 2004 to September 2021. Since October 2021 the now-called Chair of Sustainable Mobile Drivetrains is managed by Prof. Dr. Malte Jaensch.
The basic idea of the NMA is to lecture and research so that the results are directly applicable for the industry. The acquired knowledge is passed on directly in lectures, through master, bachelor and semester theses for students, to encourage an up-to-date education.
