General description
InclusiveSpaces’ vision is to design a more equitable, sustainable and climate-change adaptive future by redefining the way we approach and create our built environments through Social Innovation, Universal Design, Inclusive Planning and Design Tools, Climate-Friendly Assistive Technologies, Standardization Frameworks, and on-site deployments in 6 European Countries. Through these innovations, we aim to inspire tangible change, empower individuals with special needs, and foster a sense of belonging for all members of society while preserving our climate and the environment.
Objective
Our world is characterized by its heterogeneity, with unique abilities and needs distributed across its populace. While significant strides have been made in the EU in recognizing and addressing the requirements of persons with disabilities and elderly persons, disparities in accessibility and inclusiveness continue to mar the built environment. These disparities are exacerbated due to the climate change. As stated by Vladimir Cuk, Executive Director of the International Disability Alliance (IDA), "As persons with disabilities, we are 15 per cent of the population living on this planet. But looking at climate action decisions, you hardly find our rights and needs being considered… When disasters such as floods, cyclones, or heat waves happen, persons with disabilities are often left out of assistance plans." This situation not only hampers the quality of life for affected individuals, but also limits the collective potential of our societies. In light of the alarming statistics regarding the aging demographic, the increasing incidence of disabilities that affect more than a billion people worldwide, and the more frequent occurrence of extreme events due to the climate change, the time has come for a renewed commitment to fostering accessible, inclusive, and sustainable built environments. The current state of affairs underscores the urgency to adopt a proactive stance, integrating innovative solutions into the very blueprint of our communities. To do so, a paradigm shift is required considering the different needs of all members of our society.
