With the #Zukunftscluster initiative under the motto #clusters4future, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is focusing on an innovation-driven future. Since its launch in the summer of 2019, the initiative has rapidly evolved, setting new benchmarks in Germany's innovation landscape. In the first implementation phase of the initial competition round, seven clusters have already demonstrated their strategic importance. Five of these clusters impressed the jury in the recent evaluation and will continue their work promptly. Two clusters will need to adjust their strategic focus to remain competitive on the international stage.
All future clusters are reshaping Germany's innovation landscape and reinforcing our position as a leader in key future technologies such as cell and gene therapies, urban mobility, quantum technologies, and more. The outcomes of this regional collaboration—new products and services—will not only enhance our daily lives but also increase the international competitiveness of Germany's regions, contributing to more value creation "made in Germany."
The 14 future clusters are more than just regional networks—they are the driving forces behind solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time. The diversity of topics reflects the innovative power that arises from close collaboration between universities, research institutions, companies, and societal stakeholders within the regions.
