Let’s make integrated land-use and transport modelling useful
“Essentially, all models are wrong but some are useful“ (George Box). This contribution builds on the fact that models can never replace reality because of simplification and restricted system boundaries. The quality of a model therefore largely depends on the modelling purpose and the context of use – inspiring real choices. Results and experiences from the European COST action on “Accessibility instruments for planning practice” will be presented and discussed. Key conclusions refer to Systems Thinking and communication for powerful governance. Expectations on model development and implementation of integrated land-use and transport models will be derived.
Gebhard Wulfhorst is professor for Urban Structure and Transport Planning at TUM. He focuses on the development of integrated transport and settlement concepts, model-based impact assessment and the design of planning and implementation processes for urban regions [Website].
