Coupling Diverse Models: Case Study of Baltimore-Washington Region

As it is an expensive and time consuming task to develop a fully integrated model, coupling existing models is often used for model integration. However, there are different methods of model coupling, and the selection of the most relevant one depends on the specifics of the models, available resources and research goals. This study provides an overview of model integration approaches. In a case study, the attempts to integrate the land use, transportation, emission and land cover models using existing frameworks failed due to a lack of software compatibility and licensing restrictions. Instead, Python/GIS-based loose coupling has been implemented, satisfying the research goals.
