Featuring an exciting lineup of professors, we invite you to the TUM Asia Summer School in Beijing, held by TUM and TUM Asia, as well as Tsinghua University, China, from 17 to 28 July 2023.
Held jointly by two of the top universities in the world, TUM and Tsinghua University, China, the TUM Asia Summer School is back and is held in person in Beijing. Comprising a total of 13 sessions of training courses from 17 to 28 July, the Summer School features a cadre of experts from both universities presenting some of the latest achievements happening in the transport and logistics industry.
Students interested in transportation-related subjects are welcome to apply for this Summer School. You will have the chance to meet professors from TUM and discuss study and research opportunities at TUM in Germany.

Transportation Systems Analysis
This module will provide methodological components related to the analysis of transportation systems, with an emphasis on emerging data and applications. Extensions to traditional transportation systems analysis tools will be demonstrated, showing how emerging transport modes can be effectively modelled. Both data driven and theory based models will be presented, demonstrating how both approaches can be used in parallel.

Travel Behavior Analysis and Transport Modeling
This module provides an introduction into travel behavior analyses. Theoretical foundations of travel behavior are discussed and simple econometric estimation of travel behavior models are presented. An introduction for travel demand modeling is provided, including traditional four-step models, activity-based models, freight models and integrated land use/transport models

Traffic control systems / intelligent transportation systems
This module provides the students with insights in state of the art control measures for optimisation of traffic flow. After a detailed analysis of aims and tasks of control systems and possible structures and elements of control systems, the students will learn about applications in both public and private transport.

Transport and environment / assessment of transport infrastructure projects
Assessment methods for transport infrastructure projects are used to evaluate the benefits and risks of proposed infrastructure projects. This module will first introduce the interrelation between traffic and the environment. Methods to evaluate these interrelations and tools to measure the benefits and risks of infrastructure projects will be introduced in the second step. Constraints and advantages of specific assessment procedures will be briefly discussed through small exercises.

Road Safety Fundamentals
This module provides an introduction to road safety analyses. The main goal is to learn about road safety theory and applications. The course carries out a review of international practices of road safety from the civil engineering perspective, which can be applied to motorized and non-motorized users (pedestrian or cyclists). This includes to understand concurrent factors of road crashes, to design safety countermeasures in urban areas and to discuss the impacts of autonomous vehicles on road safety.

Public transport concepts and planning
This module will give an introduction into the planning principles of public transport systems. The characteristics of different public transport means (Bus, LRT, MRT. etc.) will be discussed. The characteristics of different line network concepts will be introduced. Public transport prioritisation and the integration of different transport means into one system are other topics in this module.

Goods transportation and logistics - How E-Commerce works
This module gives insights in goods transportation and logistics. The meaning, definition and delimitation of goods transportation and logistics will be shown and explained by using E-Commerce as an example. Therefore, the processes and the logic of logistics in E-Commerce will be shown by using some best practice examples. Some possible future trends will be discussed as well.

Public transport policies
This module aims to introduce the basic principles of public transport policies to create transport system where people can rely on a fast and passenger friendly public transport system. The theoretical policies will be supported by showing some case studies in Chinese cities, where these concepts are applied in a real city.

Transport planning theory and its development
This course is to introduce the basic principles of transport planning, planning methods, the working process of transport planning, and the application of transport planning theory in various transport planning and the latest research progress. The main contents include the characteristics of traffic demand and the main influencing factors, the content and main processes of urban traffic planning, the classical methods of urban traffic demand forecasting, and the outlook of traffic planning and management theory research.

Traffic condition estimation and control
Nowadays, with the development of data collection, analysis and application technology, various kinds of abundant data bring new opportunities for urban road traffic state estimation and control. Based on multi-source data collection, this module introduces some research achievements of the lecturer in the field of multi-level traffic state estimation and control in recent years from the perspectives of macro-traffic state analysis, estimation, micro-traffic parameter estimation and feedback closed-loop traffic control.

Applications are open to candidates who already hold a bachelor’s degree or who are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree programme, in any of the following areas (but not limited): Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Geodetics, Mechanical Engineering, Geography, Computer Science, Communications Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Architecture, Environmental Engineering, Tourisms.
All classes at the Summer School 2023 in Beijing will be conducted in English. Participants should ensure that they are proficient in English (reading and writing) at the university level.

Admission Criteria
Admission to our Summer School is highly competitive. Selection is based on a comprehensive review of all documents received in the application by the examination board. Candidates will be notified by email as soon as the admission is granted.
